No. We use sodium hydroxide (lye) to start the reaction between plant oils and water—called saponification—but no lye remains in the final bar. After curing for 4–6 weeks, it transforms completely into safe, pure soap.

Cold Process is an old-world technique where we mix oils and butters at low temperatures. We don't "cook" the soap, which preserves the natural vitamins and benefits of ingredients like Shea Butter. This creates a creamy, luxurious lather you don't get with heat-processed bars.

Handmade soap is naturally effective at cleaning! While we don't add harsh synthetic antibacterial chemicals (like triclosan), the physical action of washing with real soap and water effectively lifts away dirt, bacteria, and viruses so they can be rinsed down the drain.

That is called "Soda Ash"! It is a harmless, cosmetic reaction that sometimes happens when artisan soap meets the air. It completely washes off the first time you use the bar and is actually a great sign that you have purchased a genuine, cold-processed bar of soap.
